Withers Joins CSAM

Credit Suisse Asset Management (CSAM) has hired Gary Withers as vice chairman and head of asset management for EMEA. He assumes the role from Mark Burgess, who has resigned to pursue another opportunity.

Withers was previously chief executive of Norwich Union Life, the life insurance arm of the UK‘s largest insurance company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aviva. Prior to joining Aviva in 2001, he served in a variety of senior roles in the UK business of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers and its predecessor company, Mercury Asset Management.

David Blumer, CEO of CSAM, says, “We are delighted to have someone with Gary‘s depth of experience join the team. We have tremendous opportunities to further grow and expand our asset management business in the EMEA region. Gary‘s leadership will be instrumental in helping us further build our business in this important region.”

Withers will be a member of the CSAM management committee and Credit Suisse’s EMEA CEO management committee, he will be based in London and joins on May 1.

He will report to Blumer and Michael Philipp, CEO of the EMEA region.

CSAM has had a rash of resignations and resultant hirings over the past few months. Two weeks ago it announced the appointment of Raphael Kassin, from ABN Amro Asset Management, as head of emerging markets fixed income.

In the past four months, CSAM’s head of UK fixed income, heads of multi-manager business and the European head of credit have all left the company, as well as several UK equities staff in 2006.
