Russian billionaire Vyacheslav Taran dies after his helicopter crashed on a hillside near Monaco. The founder of crypto trading and investment platform Libertex becomes the third crypto entrepreneur to die in recent months.

Vyacheslav Taran, 53, the co-founder and President of crypto, forex and precious metal trading and investment platform Libertex has passed away after the helicopter he was traveling in collided with a hillside near Monaco and plummeted to the ground on November 25th.

“It is with great sadness that Libertex Group confirms the death of its co-founder and Chairman of Board of Directors, Vyacheslav Taran, after a helicopter crash that took place en route to Monaco on Friday, 25 November 2022. The Board of Directors of Libertex Group and company employees extend their most heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the Taran family,” said Libertex in a statement.

According to reports by the French news channel ‘French Bleu’, Taran was flying aboard an Airbus H130 from Lucerne, Switzerland to Monaco before it crashed on a hillside, killing the billionaire and his pilot. The founder of Russia’s Forex Club is survived by wife Olga Taran and their three children in Monaco, where the family has been living for years. Olga Taran is the publisher of the popular lifestyle magazine ‘Hello Monaco’.

Airbus, manufacturers of the helicopter, and local authorities have launched an investigation into Taran’s death. Monaco Police have not indicated the possibility of any foul play in the accident. French Blue reported that an unnamed second passenger was scheduled to travel alongside the Russian billionaire, but had canceled at the last minute. However, there is speculation that Taran might have been a target of Russian authorities after his company Forex Club was stripped off its operating license and shut down by the Kremlin back in 2018 for allegedly defrauding investors.

The billionaire is the latest in the wave of crypto businessmen who have died in recent weeks.

Last week, co-founder of Hong Kong-based crypto company Amber Group, Tiantian Kullander, died ‘in his sleep’. The millionaire fondly known as ‘TT’ launched Amber in 2017 with partners who were former employees of investment banks Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Amber, which was valued at $3 billion, was in the process of raising around $100 million in a funding round before his untimely passing. Besides Amber Group, TT also sat on the board of the e-sports brand Fnatic and also co-founded KeeperDAO – the first on-chain liquidity underwriter. Tiantian Kullander, 30, is survived by his wife and son.

In October, crypto developer Nikolai Mushegian died under mysterious circumstances after drowning in a Puerto Rican beach. The 29 year old millionaire early developer of MakerDAO – the world’s largest decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol – and its US dollar-pegged stablecoin DAI, died only hours after tweeting that U.S and Israeli intelligence agencies were after him for exposing a sex-trafficking ring that was operating from the Caribbean island.

Local authorities and news agencies reported that Musheigan died after being swept away by sea currents on the beach behind Ashford Hospital in Condado, Puerto Rico. The area where Mushegian was found dead is known for its dangerous strong ocean currents that have caused several fatalities this year.
