Berenberg’s Wealth and Asset Management division has added significant resources to its overlay management group with the hire of Jürgen Büscher, Dr. Jonathan Roberts and Marcus Fernandes.
Overlay management sits within Investment & Risk Management Solutions at Berenberg and is part of the investment platform managed by Matthias Born. Berenberg says it expects to increase its assets under management in currency overlay by a good 50% to more than €11 billion this year and is currently working on refining the investment process, particularly in relation to the integration of big data solutions. The team also recently implemented Germany’s first real external prime broker approach.
Büscher, who will join in September in Zurich, is a currency specialist with more than 25 years of professional experience. He joins Berenberg from QCAM Currency Asset Management, a Swiss firm specialised in currency overlay, where he was responsible for currency overlay from 2015. Previous roles held include global head of private wealth management FX, money markets & commodities at Deutsche Bank Switzerland, head of treasury sales, structured products and currency overlay management at ABN Amro Deutschland and head of FX trading, currency research and product development at DG Bank.
Dr Roberts also has over 25 years of professional experience in multi asset and FX, he joins from UBS, where he was a multi asset class trader. In this function, he built up and managed the multi-award-winning Neo Actively Managed Certificates (AMC) platform. Previous to that he held various executive positions within UBS, including head of dynamic FX and head of currency management advisory services.
The two join Fernandes, who joined Berenberg in London earlier this year. Prior to joining Berenberg, he was a senior investment manager in the currency teams of Mesirow Financial and State Street Global Advisors. He began his career in 2005 with State Street Global Advisors. As Senior Investment Manager he was responsible for more than 20 billion dollars in currency investments.
“We see the currency overlay business as a growth market, and that is why we are continuing to expand on our capabilities in this area,” says Matthias Grimm, head of investment & risk management solutions and head of overlay management. “I am delighted that we have succeeded in recruiting three very experienced hires – Jürgen Büscher, Dr. Jonathan Roberts and Marcus Fernandes – for Berenberg. This will give our international business another big boost. These personnel changes also clearly indicate our focus on maintaining our position as one of the leading names in our field and shows that our ambition attracts experts to join us.”
